CT Electric Rates – A Brief History of Electrical Energy Supply & Deregulation

Before Deregulation

Essentially, up until the mid-1990’s, electrical utilities held a monopoly of sorts in the industry.  Energy suppliers could decide to build power plants whenever they wanted, and then were able to request an electrical rate increase to cover the cost of the construction.  Whether the project came in on time or on budget was irrelevant.  Whatever the cost, the utility could transfer that cost to the consumer via a rate increase.  If you lived or had a business in the utility’s service area, you simply paid whatever electricity rate they charged and had little say in the matter.

After Deregulation

In the mid-1990’s, various utilities were deregulated, or restructured, to include energy suppliers, such as those who generate electricity and provide natural gas.  In the electricity generation industry in particular, utilities had to put their electricity up for bid in public auctions.  Now, supply and demand would dictate the cost of energy.  In addition, the deregulation of electrical utilities also opened up a new opportunity for independent electrical energy suppliers.  These independent electrical energy suppliers now had the ability to purchase blocks of electricity at market rates, and were then able to sell the electricity to consumers at discounted rates.  Currently there are approximately 20 states that have fully implemented competitive electrical utility markets that allow all customers choices and options when it comes to selecting an electrical energy supplier.

Connecticut is one of the states that has fully implemented utility deregulation and has access to the benefits that market competition provides.  Residential consumers and business owners now have options when it comes to finding competitive CT electric rates.  My goal is to help you take advantage of deregulation such that you can find competitive electricity rates in Connecticut.

You don’t have to shop for a competitive rate; however, if you don’t, you will pay a default rate known as the General Service Rate (GSC).  The GSC rate can be found on your electricity bill under “Supplier Service Detail.”  When you choose another electrical energy supplier with a lower rate, you will still get the same bill from Eversource Energy or United Illuminating, with the lower rate replacing the default rate.  Your electricity bill will identify your electrical energy supplier underneath “Supplier Service Detail,” followed by your kilowatt per hour (kW-h) consumption and rate.

CT Electric Rates, Fees, & Other Charges

One thing important for you to understand is that your new CT electric rate will only be reflected in what you pay for your actual electricity supply.  You also have to pay the associated cost for transmission and distribution (T&D), to include any service and distribution fees, stranded charges, fuel surcharges, education fees, and any number of other charges designated by your T&D company.  Whatever those fees and service charges are, they will not be impacted by your new, and possibly reduced CT electricity rate.

Energize CT provides a website where you can search for electrical energy suppliers to compare CT electric rates.  I realize I have an agenda, but you need to be careful when choosing an electrical energy supplier.  All that glitters is not gold…

How It Works…

All electrical energy suppliers have to purchase their electricity via auction at market rates, and they then sell that electricity at a profit.  You can rest assured that no one is in this business to lose money.  You should also know that no electrical energy supplier out there can promise you the cheapest or lowest CT electric rate.  There are a number of different attributes that are taken into consideration when an electrical energy supplier determines a CT electric rate.  The amount they paid for the electricity, the density of the population, and any number of other facets goes into calculating the CT electric rate.

While it may appear that you are going to get the lowest or cheapest CT electric rate by just comparing the price per kW-h, you should use caution when choosing an electrical energy supplier.  Unfortunately, there may be other associated enrollment and cancellation fees, and hidden surcharges that are identified in the “fine print.”  If an independent electrical energy supplier is promising you the cheapest electricity rates in Connecticut, then that “guarantee” should serve as a red flag warning you to carefully evaluate the provider before you acquire their electrical service.  You may be paying a penny or two less per kW-h (for 40 kW-h, for example, you’d be paying an “additional” $0.80 cents per month), but you may also be paying an additional $10.00/month in some other hidden fee or charge.  So just be careful when choosing your provider, and I am hoping this is where I may be of some assistance.

CT Electric Rates – Personal Experience

A Previous Electrical Energy Supplier

I first switched over my service to a new electrical energy supplier in 2008.  I won’t name the company, because that would be unprofessional.  But they came to my door, direct-selling their electrical energy service, promising me a discounted electricity rate.  I didn’t search for any other providers – they had a good electricity rate and I elected to use them as my electrical energy supplier.  To be honest, I paid little attention to my electricity bill; however, I did notice it was going up over time.  I really didn’t think about it and just assumed it was market forces driving up the electricity rates.  Now fast forward to 2016.  I became an independent business owner, and when I went to switch over to my current electrical energy supplier, I found out I was paying over $0.11 cents per kW-h.  Those guys had been bumping up my rate slowly over time, and due to my own neglect, I was being significantly overcharged.  When I switched to my current electrical energy supplier, I saved over 40% on my electricity bill.

My Current Electrical Energy Supplier

I cannot promise the same outcome (40% CT electric rate reduction) for everyone.  In fact, I can’t even promise that my organization will have the cheapest CT electricity rates.  But there are times when you may heave heard about other’s experiences where they’ve been mistreated by a provider.  I understand, because I’ve had that same experience myself.  What I can tell you from my personal experience is that in every case where I have investigated another electrical energy supplier, my organization either meet or beat their rates.  When I see an electrical energy supplier with a significantly lower rate, in each case where I have investigated, there was an underlying service charge or fee that more than made up for the “cheaper” electricity rates.

Again, to be fair and transparent, I want your business, and I haven’t evaluated every electrical energy supplier on the market.  Considering the number of electrical energy suppliers out there, that would be significant commitment in terms of time and effort.  But in each case where I have performed an evaluation or investigation, again and generally speaking, we meet or beat our competitors.  I can’t promise you the cheapest CT electric rates in the state, but I can promise that we’ll be competitive, and that I personally will take care of you and your account.

Electricity Rate Increases

Whenever you sign up with any electrical energy supplier, you generally have some type of time duration associated with your account.  Meaning, you may sign up for a certain CT electric rate and “lock it in” for anywhere from 4 months to 3 years.  What people generally don’t understand is that when their selected plan period ends, your account will automatically transfer over to a variable CT electric rate.  So you go from a fixed or “locked in” rate to a variable rate.  The variable rate will change month to month depending upon various market dynamics, such as supply and demand.  In the winter you may get a really low CT electric rate, and in the summer, if it’s hot, you may be paying a very high CT electric rate.  The most likely reason is not that the electrical energy supplier is trying to gouge you, but that you’re selected time duration ended, and your account transferred over to a variable rate.

It is easy to transfer your CT electric rate from a variable rate account back over to a fixed rate account.  Just go to your electrical energy supplier’s website, typically where you pay your electricity bill online, and they should provide you with the option to select a new plan / fixed CT electric rate.  If not, then call your electrical energy supplier and tell them you want to be on a fixed rate plan.  Finally, whatever plan you choose, set a calendar reminder on your phone or computer that’s going to alert you about 1 month before your plan ends, so that you can go back in and select a new CT electric rate plan.

CT Electric Rates – Which Plan Do I Choose?

Honestly, it’s really up to your own personal preference.  As I described above, I like to be on a fixed rate plan, because I want to know that the rate is going to remain the same for whatever time period I chose.  If the CT electric rate happens to go down while you’re in your plan period, you’re still going to get whatever rate you chose.  But if the CT electric rate goes up during your plan period, you’re going to be saving money.  It’s a catch-22.  There are others who love the variable rate plans because they get the best CT electric rate when the price is low, and believe that it all averages out across the year.  It just depends upon your personality and which one of those options makes better business sense to you.

CT Electric Rates – Can I get Free Electricity?

The answer to that is “Yes” and “No.”  Kind of what you expected, right?

The truth is that nothing is ever free, and that includes electricity.  With that said, however, it is possible, with my organization, to get your CT electricity rate per kW-h down to $0.00.  Please remember that this does not include any charges you pay your electrical energy supplier for transmission and distribution of electricity.  That charge – whatever it is – will remain the same.  But with my organization, there is a scenario where your CT electricity rate can go to $0.00.

Start Your Own Online Business

You can get your electricity rate down to $0.00 if you decided to start your own online business, just like I did.

There are a number of benefits associated with operating an online home-based business, and I am a big proponent of “work from home” business opportunities.  I personally am especially fond of online “work from home” business opportunities – you can read more about it here.  But there are a number of benefits associated with this specific work from home business opportunity, and a few are specific to your electricity bill:

  1. You can get up to 10% of your CT electric bill refunded back to you each month (not including your T&D fee); and
  1. You can ultimately get your CT electric rates down to $0.00 (not including your T&D fee).

For me personally, this was an easy decision – no one had to sell me on anything.  There are a number of services and utilities I use every day, and electricity is one of them.  I’m going to be paying an electricity bill to someone for the rest of my life.  I have to assume that you’re in the same position.  If you’re going to have to pay your electric bill each month for the rest of your life, why not get some of it refunded back to you?  Better yet, why not get that CT electric rate down to $0.00?  If you only saved $50.00 a month, that’s $600.00 per year, or $12,000.00 across 20 years.  Some people have chosen to start their own business based on these few benefits alone.

To be fair, it’s not a savings you will reap immediately because there is a service level you have to reach to get the full 10% monthly refund.  But on the flip side, if you refer 10 other families to our (your) electrical energy service provider, your CT electric rate will go to $0.00.  Additionally, if/when you reach the appropriate service level (60 customer service points), you’ll be receiving a 10% discount on your bill AND receiving a 10% commission on the monthly bills of everyone you referred – a consistent monthly recurring, residual income.  So I guess, in reality, you can get paid to have free electricity.

Owning this specific online business is especially cost-effective if you have multiple offices, large warehouses / distribution centers, or manufacturing organizations where you use a lot of electricity.  In fact, if you spend over $25,000.00 a year in electricity, we can get your organization a customized quote.  Not only can you see significant savings in your business associated with electricity, but also with your phone service, internet service, security service, and merchant services accounts.
